Crossings - a film about the Crossings Unit in the IDF

This film offers the first sustained, close-up documentation of one of the most charged points of contact in the Israeli–Palestinian reality: the daily encounters between Palestinian residents crossing into Israel and the soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces’ Crossing Unit.

Between the West Bank and the sovereign territory of Israel lies a controlled border area with a number of crossings. These terminals, managed jointly by the military and other state authorities, are highly sensitive due to ongoing security concerns and a long history of terrorist attacks.

For years, the checkpoints were staffed by soldiers performing standard operational duties. Over time, the IDF recognized that this task demanded far more than routine guard service: it required professional training in governance, labor law and border control. These are in effect border crossings, but they are not civilian or tourist border posts. That shift led to the creation of a specialized unit: the IDF Crossing Unit.

Yet these soldiers are not merely border inspectors. They are also recognized as combat soldiers. So much responsibility rests on their young shoulders: to maintain operational discipline, act professionally, represent the army and the State of Israel, and balance toughness with fairness. In a split second, they must be ready to respond with lethal force if a deadly threat arises - and moments later, show politeness, firmness, or compassion as needed.

All this is entrusted to young men and women who, only a few months earlier, were high-school students. And let’s be honest - military police service is rarely a first choice. But once they arrive, they come to understand the mission’s importance, and a deep sense of pride and solidarity begins to grow within the unit.
